Happy Monday! It’s Day 8 of my Countdown to Christmas Recipes! And here’s a confession, I’m a little unorganised with this, tomorrow may or may not be the last recipe I post in this countdown to Christmas. I haven’t baked Day 10 yet and really it all depends on when I get them baked! So watch this space I get. If this is your first encounter with my Countdown to Christmas, it’s pretty simple, I have just been posting one festive recipe a day in the lead up to Christmas. Day 1 was Spiced Caramel, Day 2 was a Chocolate Peppermint Milkshake, Day 3 was Peppermint Puppy Chow, Day 4 was Mince Pies, Day 5 was Christmas Spiced Chocolate Cake, Day 6 was Frosted Shortbread Christmas Cookies and Day 7 was Spiced Chocolate Orange Puppy Chow. And today I bring you this Spiked Black Forest Milkshake.

Black Forest is one of my all time favourite flavour combinations, cherry and chocolate are just made for each other! Black Forest is also a very festive flavour combo, so I consume a lot of it this time of year. Winter is one of my favourite times of year because it means Costa Coffee start doing their Black Forest Hot Chocolates, and they’re my absolute favourite thing – I drink so many of them to the point where I think I might need an intervention! Now, I do make my own at home sometimes but I don’t think me putting a couple of shots of Kirsch in my hot chocolate really counts as a recipe (I have shared my hot chocolate recipe before though, it’s amazing). So, instead I’m sharing a just as yummy Black Forest Milkshake which, yes you guessed it, is spiked with Kirsch!

I love adding Kirsch to anything I can, it has such a great cherry flavour to it that when you add it to something that’s already got cherries in it, it just intensifies the flavour to an amazing degree! And traditionally, you can’t make Black Forest without a little Kirsch. Of course, if you don’t want alcohol in your milkshake you can just omit the Kirsch it’ll still be really yummy!

I used canned cherries for this because despite Black Forest being a festive recipe, you can’t get fresh cherries this time of year – at least not in the UK! Canned cherries are great though because you get to use all the yummy, sweet syrup they live in too! If you can, buy cherries that are already pitted because the majority of the time I spent making this milkshake was me pitting the cherries – this was after I’d put them in the blender before realising they weren’t pitted, oops! Dark chocolate ice cream is also the best type to use for this milkshake for that rich flavour, if you can’t get dark chocolate you can add a little cocoa powder to your milk chocolate ice cream to make up for it!
